Femoral neck fracture affects the area between the femoral head and the pertrochanteric region. It is a common condition in the elderly, in particular women with osteoporosis, and can have severe consequences on the patient's mobility and independence.
Causes: The most common are falls from ground level, minor trauma in people with fragile bones or, less commonly, high intensity injuries in young patients.
Symptom: Severe hip pain, inability to stand or walk, shortening of the lower limb and external rotation of the leg. The diagnosis is quickly established by clinical examination and pelvis X-ray.
Treatment: In most cases, treatment is surgical. You can opt for screw or rod osteosynthesis (depending on age and type of fracture) or hip replacement (partial or total prosthesis). The aim is to resume walking as quickly as possible and prevent complications.
