Fingers in the hammer

Fingers in the hammer is a common deformity of toes 2-4, characterized by excessive flexion of the proximal interphalangeal joint and sometimes the distal. The finger looks like a hammer, hence the name.

Causes: The main drivers are narrow or high-heeled shoes, plantar static abnormalities, repeated traumaneurological or rheumatic conditions that affect muscle balance.

Symptom: Pain when walking, appearance of calosities or corns above the prominent joint, difficulty with footwear and, in advanced forms, joint stiffness permanent.

Treatment: In the early stages, it is recommended orteze, shoe modification and stretching exercises. In severe forms, the following may be used corrective surgery (tenotomy, arthroplasty or arthrodesis) to restore the shape and function of the finger.
