Electrocardiogram (EKG)

Electrocardiogram (EKG)

Electrocardiogram (EKG) is a simple and essential routine investigation that records the heart's electrical activity in graph form.

Using electrodes attached to the patient's skin, electrical signals generated by the heart are picked up and recorded on millimeter paper.

EKG:

  • requires no special training,
  • is painless and fast,
  • provides valuable information in diagnosing heart conditions that may require immediate treatment.

The EKG can provide data about:

  • heart rhythm,
  • heart position,
  • the origin and propagation of the electrical impulse through the myocardium,
  • the presence of an acute myocardial infarction,
  • the effects of certain medicines,
  • functioning of an implanted pacemaker.
