Ultrasound Doppler

What is Doppler ultrasound and what is it used for

Doppler ultrasound is a special ultrasound method that assesses the morphology and blood flow in vessels using a dedicated probe. It is painless, non-irritating and requires no special training.

They can be examined:

  • carotid and vertebral arteries (extracranial territory)
  • upper limb arteries and veins
  • lower limb arteries and veins

Doppler ultrasound is recommended both for screening patients without symptoms, but with cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, diabetes, family history) and for those with symptoms suggestive of vascular disease.

Carotid Doppler ultrasound
It is recommended for patients who experience dizziness, vertigo, balance disturbances or loss of consciousness, as well as those who have had a stroke. It can detect thickening of the vascular wall, atheroma plaques or significant stenosis of the carotid arteries.

Doppler ultrasound of lower limb arteries
It is indicated when the patient has pain in the lower limbs on exertion or even at rest, cold feet or ulcerative lesions. It may reveal narrowing, stenosis or obstruction of arteries.

Venous Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs
It is recommended in cases of edema, enlargement of a limb, pain, ulcers or heavy legs. It can detect venous insufficiency or the presence of blood clots (venous thrombosis), a serious condition that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment.
