Outpatient monitoring of blood pressure

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (24h) is a modern method of investigation and diagnosis of hypertension, frequently used in our clinic.

Whereas in the past blood pressure was measured only with a classic sphygmomanometer, today we can use automated devices, both in the office and at home. This investigation allows us to measure central blood pressure and, more importantly, to follow the values over 24 hours under real-life conditions.

How the procedure works

Monitoring is done with a hand-held device attached to the patient that measures blood pressure automatically at regular intervals for 24 hours.

While wearing the device:

  • the patient is encouraged to carry out usual activities (without strenuous physical exertion),
  • when the cuff is inflated, they should stop their activity and keep their arm still, at heart level.

The patient will complete a daily diary, in which they will note:

  • mealtimes,
  • the times he administered the medication,
  • bed and wake times,
  • any relevant events that could influence blood pressure values.

This method is very useful in:

  • diagnosis of hypertension,
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of antihypertensive treatment,
  • Identify isolated high values (e.g. only at night or in certain situations).
