The rate of implantation of cardiac pacing systems and defibrillators has been increasing in recent years, with thousands of patients benefiting annually from a significant improvement in life expectancy and quality of life despite serious heart conditions.
In parallel, perhaps less discussed, undesirable medical situations have arisen that require the removal or extraction of these devices: infections of the implanted devices or accidents leading to the rupture of the catheters implanted in the patient's heart to regulate the heart's functions.
For the first time, such an intervention took place at the Clinicco Hospital in Brasov, performed by the team formed by Dr. Horia Roșianu - the Romanian doctor who has performed the most procedures to extract the probes - together with Dr. Sorin Micu, a primary cardiologist with experience in the field of implantable devices.
The 63-year-old patient who benefited from the expertise of the Rosianu-Micu medical team suffers from some serious heart diseases, has a tricameral defibrillator implanted on the left side of the heart and a contractility modulation system on the right side, but, in time, the defibrillator probe broke.
The probes in these devices help electrical impulses from the implanted device to correct or stimulate the heart's activity so that the patient can lead a decent life.
"The next cardiac arrest would have been fatal because the defibrillator had no way to react to a broken lead. The trickiest part was that the veins through which these leads were placed were all scarred shut so you had nowhere to put in a new lead. To abandon him with that broken catheter is tantamount to a death sentence which forces us to look for a way to fix it. The only way has been to extract the problematic well and place a new one in the remaining free spot." - said Dr. Sorin Micu, the patient's attending physician.
The intervention was easy for the patient because it did not involve the use of a scalpel, it lasted about two hours, but this performance is due to the experience of the team that entered the operating room. Dr. Horia Rosianu is the doctor who has performed hundreds of these procedures in hospitals in the country and abroad, which places him in the world elite of this specialty. Dr. Sorin Micu is also one of the cardiologists with extensive experience in implanting cardiac devices.
Thanks to this intervention, which makes it possible for his heart to function within its parameters, the patient's life expectancy has improved significantly and his quality of life is good given his diagnosis of heart failure.
The premiere recorded by Clinicco Hospital in Brasov places the unit at the forefront of private cardiology hospitals, being the only one in the country where this vital procedure was performed for the operated patient.
